Being lucky to join many companies with various culture in different countries, I deeply understand what will last stand with all of us is culture. At FPT, STICO culture is FPTer lifestyle showing their smart, funny and realistic spirit as well as promoting their creative in any situation. At Tinh Van, family culture is clearly showed from top BOD to staff:
“Trên cùng chuyến xe bus,
Chẳng quan trọng đi đâu,
Vui hát ca suốt nẻo,
Sướng vì đi cùng nhau”.
At Brandtology, a business intelligent company in Singapore, realistic, profession and measurement is always staying on top of their priority. At Eway, happiness is the center of their culture where each of all their staffs can freely do whatever they want to in order to feeling happy. At AGC Glass Belgium – a branch stay at top 1 worldwide glass manufacture from Japanese Corp. – they aim to be excellent in execution and never-ending challenge to become top supplying global material. To sum up, I would say that each culture has no right or wrong because it depends on their own choice to reach their vision.
In our definition, culture is our own choice of core values that we want to build up, to live with and to distinguish Ecomobi as a leading media and data Service Company in Asia. These choices must be clearly and officially written down and of course always be showed in specific actions such as hiring process, or training session, and be practiced daily in every communication. From my personal point of view, these choices are not only applying for Ecomobi but also useful and being my living principles. I usually say that “the way you do one thing is for many things as well” cause it’s our habit. I have comfortable feeling when I’m taking care of other people. I deeply understand the root of problem after many times of practicing with failure-and-test methodology. I make a big improvement when I see myself as a very root of problem. I feel so confident when I can keep each of word. I feel free to go to anywhere or talked to anyone with open-minded mindset. With me, these values help me growing up to become a mature man. “How many roads must a man walk down? Before you call him a man? ” – Bod Dylan. I would like to walk through and deeply understand every detail of each value.
This is the first and foremost important value that we decide to go with. This value contains many followed-after values and is a northern star for our culture. Integrity is about keeping our commitment, which includes every and each of word you say or expectation of others give to you and you accept it, entirely and honestly. The value already contains many skills: listening to others carefully to avoid misunderstanding; understanding your ability to fulfill the commitment; doing whatever you say and the most importantly skill is being honest with yourself even if no one is watching you.
It’s not easy at all, definitely! Since I know this value 2 years ago, I myself also figured out how can I practice and apply it into work and life, where can I start, which are its measurement criteria and etc. I tried so many ways, such as made a public announcement but when I failed I was still feeling okay, I invited partner to take next steps with me but we both failed.
My big failure is with AdFlex when I was kicked out of this company, which is consequence of my continuous failure in practicing Integrity. I realize that the starting point for Integrity is to be honest with myself from inside cause only me is the one who knows that whether will I follow my commitment or not. Being honest with yourself means that you learn to listen to your body and your mind, reflect yourself frequently, spend more time to listen to others than talk and only give promise when you really mean that. I have learned all of these things via mediation. It may sounds weird for me of 2 years ago and I think you would feel the same as well. However, mediation is not about what I am saying but about what I am experiencing. Almost every day, I spend 20-30 minutes to sitting down, doing nothing and mediating. After that time, my mind is quite clear and that’s the moment when I start looking back to what I have done. Sounds quite complicated but there is no shortcut to go deeply into you without practicing. By the time, when your mind is ready, the outside action will be showed. Our energy now will focus on listening to others, doing the thing you feel right and get more accomplishment for your word. Trust me, you will become very big trustful man by living full integrity cause action is always louder than talk.
Please keep in mind that, I have been practicing all these things for 2 years, I don’t want to affirm that it’s right or wrong but I just want to make my life and my job work out easier. Indeed, it is (luckily)! Again, that’s definitely my choice. Now it’s company’s choice.
Responsibility is one big part of integrity but we would like to emphasize this value clearly and strongly. To be honest, I see many Vietnamese people lack this important skill that may be the very consequence of wrong education system. Our teachers or parents talk a lot about responsibility but they don’t teach us what it really means and how to take it. Poor us, seriously! In Ecomobi, Responsibility includes two steps: Firstly, be ready to take full consequence of action we made (even get fire) and secondly, recognizing us as a root of problem to improve ourselves and make change for future.
I learn this value from Japanese people. The normal action you see in Japanese people is that they always first say: “It’s my failure”. How possible this action changes you and makes you better. But, it actually did. To say this sentence “It’s my failure”, you have to step back first, calm down and then be honest to yourself that you realize where you made mistake and then fix it. Please keep in mind that: never say this sentence without thinking carefully about situation and solution, otherwise you will be so clique. This attitude will change your action, sure 100%.
In order to practice this value, I have my personal technique, called Ownership. I am owner of my word, owner of my job, owner of my team, owner of my choice, owner of my life. This is fundamental attitude for all my action. Someone will talk I’m CEO so I feel owner about this. But this is the first lesson i gain from my first boss 8 years ago. So, everything happen around me and I will become root of problem cause i am owner of my life. Stop blaming someone else for my life. Deal!
Last but not least, I remember the quote form Warrant Buffet: “I teach my children two things: Be responsible and be able to take this responsibility”.
I think about the value a lot. Actually the word “Growth Hacking” becomes a trendy, lifestyle words in startup world. I don’t want to bring the “fake” value to our company to make us look like fashion. I hate the style to be honest. Let’s define it very simple and understandable for everyone: “In Ecomobi, Growth Hack is process of test-and-failure daily to understand deeply core problem before making any improvement, creative or even big impact. We follow the process of empathy: Know – Understand – Do – Analyze – Reflect. We believe that miracle happens on workplace of working hard people”.
I love that value which is very difficult to talk by easily to feel by action with heart. Difficult but still possible! In Ecomobi, we care about our people, client, partner with whole heart and integrity. I learn the value from my family, from Hiep and the way he take care his children, from small action from Kim in Malaysia tour, from the way Dong taking care his clients. We are practicing this value daily. The question for me, and maybe someone else, is that how can we care about other in the right way.
Again, it starts from inside us. Only happy people can bring happiness to someone. Only in-love people can fall in love with someone. Only people know how to take care themselves can take care others. Thus, the first thing we have to learn is the way we take care us both mental and physical such as daily physical exercise, good movie, habit of reading book, vacation, etc… When you are taking care yourself, incidentally inside you will give desire to giving this care, this love to others. That’s what i called truly care. Christine is outstanding example for caring since the first day Kim and I met her. She is willing to help us go through all the difficulties in our early days in Indonesia. She did it just because she cared (at the moment, we are neither business partner nor client at all). That’s the reason why she knows half of Jakarta. The second thing is about our mature. The more we grow up, the more we are willing to give and be honest, the more we will get. Caring is about giving.
As i usually say “No one care what you did, people only remember your result”. Result always goes with SMART Goal: Specific – Measurable – Attainable – Realistic – Timely. According to this goal, i have sixth “W”: Who involve – What will i accomplish – Where – when – Which constraint or requirement – Why. Result oriented and Growth Hacking are pair of values to distinguish Ecomobi with other competitor. One pays attention on process, another focus on result but both of these wants to make splendid change at the end of the day.
With me, the value is so easy to practice daily. Before any meeting,i always ask myself first and then colleagues what will we want to archive today. In any report, I need the number or something measurable. If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it. That’s why in our admin page for CPI and CPL group, the number is showed everywhere. Thanks to this value, Ecomobi will build data-driven business. We make all decision based on data.
The value strongly reminds me that we are international company. Yes, indeed Ecomobi is regional corp since it’s established in March 1st 2016 in Singapore. We are team of people coming from different culture, GEO, nationality, religion with the same vision of one Ecomobi. At Ecomobi, we respect and welcome all these difference because we believe that these differences generate our advantage on the market. I experience this value since I started studying in Belgium. In my class, there were 65 people coming from 32 countries with many religions. The first thing i have to to with open minded is that i have to clear two things: one is feeling of scary or unconfident that i’m different cause i come from developing country; second is to erase prejudice about difference in order to listen better. I took 2-3 months to do that. It’s not easy at all, especially with my limitation in language. I’m sure that Tuan Anh or Jane will suffer this pain softly but now they have a lot of friends and brother/sister in Ecomobi Indonesia taking care them truly. In this value, I would like to emphasize on listening skill, which take us many many years to learn. My personal experience on practicing this skill is that i just imagine myself as full glass of water. The first thing to listen is to pull out water from glass to have available space and then slowly put more water till it’s full. The more time you listen, the more time you pull out the water, the more you learn new things. That’s open-minded in my mind.
Above are core values of Ecomobi in my opinion. Founder team and I make official announcement about our choices. There is nothing about right or wrong here. We just believe that these values become our magical tool driving us to achieve Ecomobi Vision: Leading media and data service in South East Asia next 2-3 years.
